Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA)

The associated beneficiary Amvrakikos gulf – Lefkada Management Agency (ALMA) on 16/02/2022 has been dissolved and integrated in Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA).

The NECCA’s Management Unit of Acheloos Valle and Amvrakikos Gulf Protected Areas is in charge of the management of the area.

The main activities are focused on the administration and management of Amvrakikos Wetlands National Park and the Natura 2000 sites including its endangered species and landscape areas of particular ecological importance designated as protected.

Amvrakikos attracts strong interest at National and International level as one of the most important wetlands of Greece (site of the Ramsar Convention). The remarkable habitats, resident and migratory birds, rare plants, animals and fishes create a unique ecosystem. In Amvrakikos, 296 bird species have been recorded, representing about 75% of the Hellenic avifauna.

Moreover, the bottlenose dolphins well known as “dolphins of Amvrakikos” and the sea turtle Caretta caretta are examples of rare and endangered fauna. Management Agency has 16 employees (including 5 scientists and 8 guards) with a long and wide experience in the sectors of environmental management and scientific monitoring. It also provides technical and specialist support to other public authorities and research institutes, managing the environmental impact of anthropic activities.
