First official Seagrass Day

In May 2022, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed March 1st as World Seagrass Day!

Highlight the urgent need to raise awareness at all levels and to promote and facilitate action for seagrass conservation.

The benefits of conserving and restoring seagrass beds contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Furthermore, given their ability to store and sequester carbon, their inclusion in determined national contributions helps nations achieve their goals under the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The inclusion of seagrass ecosystems in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is also of utmost importance to protect the integrity of marine ecosystems.
